Here’s our meaty highlight of follow-ups for Grocery Showcase West 2013 to preview what may be lining the many local independent grocer and store shelves, in addition coming to local restauranteurs near you.

Moo
We chatted it up with Aly of Trimpac, who is known to work with many restaurant chefs on specific meats. Sensing that we’re fans of marbly and flavourful meat like Kobe Beef, he showed us a Canadian offering: PEI Cattle.

Upon mentioning PEI, I was visually thinking about cows with red hair, like Anne and Green Gables. However, these special cattle are fed by the main ingredient that PEI is known for: potatoes. The potatoes give the beef lots of marbling, plus it can also be described to taste buttery.

Specialty Meats

Being Asian-Canadian, I always thought I had tried a large variety of meats.

Could you guess which Trimpac specialty meat offerings we have had before?

  • Buffalo
  • Duck
  • Ostrich
  • Pheasant
  • Guinea
  • Hens
  • Rabbit
  • Turtle
  • Squab
  • Geese
  • Partridge
  • Quail

New online shopping tools

groceryShowcasewest-gsw2013-01

  • With the new BC Beef BC Grocers online ordering tool, chefs are able to immediately determine cost per serving online.
  • Next Spring 2014, there will be a new iPhone (and maybe Android) app for families and tourists to quickly locate stores and restaurants where B.C. grown and processed meat products are available.

In the meanwhile, you can always look for an Abattoir on their website >
